TAG Fall Cave In 2003 - Horse Skull Cave

On Saturday October 11, Stephanie and I TAG-ged along with members of TBAG for a trip to Horse Skull Cave, Alabama. The cave seemed ideal for me because it looked like a short walk from the road. My knee was swollen and in pain from the previous days hike across another mountain, and Horse Skull seemed a much better alternative than the other trips mentioned that morning (Kennamer – 1 mile straight up, and Buggytop – a 2 mile death march.)

The group consisted of Stephanie Juiliano, Dan Straley, Eric Amsbury, Tom Turner, Robert Brooks, Chrissy Jett, Becky Dettorre, Rick (?), Mike Kettles and Sue Kettles. We arrived at the entrance and had to negotiate the 25 foot climb down. Dan was the first down and helped everyone out with the climb. The cave turned out to be bigger than I imagined it. The cave has some high canyon passages, tall domes, some formations, and historical signatures. There are also a couple of very impressive guano piles in the back (which pale in comparison to what I would see the next day.)

We toured the cave at a leisurely pace and ripped on each other the entire time. Stephanie finally got to meet Eric and see his legendary cleanness firsthand. She just couldn't believe how someone could stay so clean in a cave and she noted that even though she saw him sitting on muddy rocks, his butt was still clean. I remember Dan telling me about Eric’s clean butt once too…

Group shot at the entrance. Notice the rocks that Dan is holding. Seems he walked
through much of the cave without noticing they were in his pack!
