JUG HOLE 7-21-02
By Bill Walker

Sunday July 21st, a group of cavers went swimming at Blue Springs. Near the end of the day Adam says he's going to check out a pit someone told him about. Of course Sean and I have to see it too - we can't have Adam's cave archive contain caves that we don't know about!

We leave our families at the springs and head off with Adam to check out the pit. I wasn't expecting much, but I was very surprised when we arrived. The pit is really deep considering the area it's located in, and the bottom is filled with deep water. There was a little waterfall cascading into the pit from a perched aquifer.

Adam says it's called Jug Hole (not to be confused with Jug Sink, the May's cave) because cave divers found a body at the bottom and a 'shine jug was found next to the remains.

I belayed Adam, who basically free climbed the pit, with his 50' rope. I had two feet of rope left in my hand when he got to the bottom, so the pit is roughly 40' deep. The top of the sink is probably 20' higher than the top of the shaft. This is one of the deeper Florida pits.

We didn't have time to explore because we had to get back to our families, but Adam said there is some dry cave at the bottom and the water is very deep. I know all the cave divers are going to e-mail me after reading this!
