Caren Beck
Adam, Sul, and I checked out a potentially beautiful karst feature
today. (It was beautiful before we started digging, but having a
visible natural karst sink is always an improvement in our books!)
Our landowner, eager to cleanup his sink, contacted the FSS after
seeing our website. He has plans to sell the land, and from a
conservationist standpoint he agrees that the sink should be rid
of its garbage fill deposited there over 20 years ago. When he
bought the land in 1980, he had heard that there was a cave there,
and that cows had fallen into the sink. Since then he has removed
some of the trash, but when he came upon a mattress, he believed
the task was just too great and stopped the cleanup work. Over
the years the sink has filled with natural compost and today only
a portion of the karst wall remains visible... but not for long!
Today we cleaned out the remnants of a mattress, many large cow
bones, including the remains of an impressive skull, and assorted
glass bottles, including an old milk bottle labeled, "The
Florida Store".
We have the landowner's permission to return to the sink and
continue hauling out the trash and debris. We look forward to
restoring the natural beauty to this unique feature!
