On August 8, 2003 a large
group of cavers from around the state joined together to clean Vampire Sink
in High Springs. The sinkhole, which contains an underwater cave, has long
been a site of dumping abuse. The sinkhole and surrounding property was covered
with trash, broken glass, tires, and carpet. The underwater cave, which is
a window to the Floridan Aquifer, contains old appliances, rusted drums, and
even boxes of hypodermic needles.
The cleanup, organized by Wes Skiles and coordinated by Brian Williams, is
part of a much larger project at the site. The main focus of the August cleanup
was to clean the major site trash and to start the underwater cleanup. The
above ground cleanup was successful and, within a few hours, volunteers filled
a large dumpster provided by the City. The underwater cleanup was hampered
by poor visibility from recent heavy rains, and will need to be finished in
a few months.
