BAT CAVE CLEANUP
By Bill Walker
On Saturday, January 26, the FSS went to Bat Cave in Newberry primarily to clean up glass and other bits of trash in remote places. This cave is probably the most heavily vandalized and trashed out cave in Florida. The cave was a major party spot until Sante Fe Community College bought the property and turned it into a field studies classroom. Bat Cave has had many major cleanups in the past (a bus was even pulled out of one of the entrances!) Today, the cave is very clean in comparison to past years.
Our goal was to remove as much minor debris as we could. The dirt floors near the entrances contain tons of broken glass and small rusty bits of metal. We successfully removed several hundred pounds of glass and rusting iron from the dirt floors of the cave. We even had some spare time to test out a cave radio.
